Life in Slum

Corona Virus has hit almost all countries around the world and Nepal is not left behind the effect of virus. The impact of the global health crisis for a country like Nepal is huge. Measured enforced by authorities made life of people who worked at day to feed families at night has been miserable. It had been a year since corona virus outbreak, our effort to help communities, families and children continues.

25 years old Bindu Chaudhary gave birth to her third baby-boy at the shelter. Her husband, Bishal Chaudhary who is 27 years old is working as a trash pickers and his income is not enough to fulfill even the food requirement of his 5 members of his family.

When we visited Bindu, we saw that Bindu was feeding packet milk to the baby. She was dipping a cotton pieces in the milk and squeeze the cotton to drop milk to her baby. When we asked her don't you have a bottle to feed milk for your baby she replied, "no".

Rainbow Volunteers supported Bindu with essentials nutritional supplies like Beans, eggs, lentils, oils, and also provided her warm blanket, milk feeding bottle, and mats. We also gave her some warm clothes for her new born baby and some infant food. After we provided all the things she needs during her early stage of maternity she become so sentimental and thanked us.

In this community there are still 3 pregnant mothers hoping to deliver baby between December and January. The cold December night, having no warm clothes or enough to eat, it is one of the most challenging situations for a woman to give birth to a baby.

Mostly all children do not have enough warm clothes here. So, Rainbow Volunteers collected clothes from relatives and friends to donate to children of this community. In the picture above is Jyotsna whom we have noticed in same clothes since our first day. When we asked her mother how many clothes Jyotsna has her mother replied, "this is the only clothes she had". It was a green skirt like dress but it looked dark and black.

When we let Jyotsna change her clothes we could see a million dollar smile at her face. We realized that for a child without anything we gave a most valuable gift: we become a reason for her to smile.

Along with cooked hot meals, rations to families in difficulties, warm clothes, and supporting mother with new born babies we have been continually working to help children to feel as if they have a school. Our volunteers organize weekly outdoor event for children of the slum community and help them to explore the bright side of their childhood.
